Origin
- created (Col. 1:16; Neh. 9:6)
- only God is "from everlasting to everlasting" (Ps. 90:2)
Angels are of a higher order than man
- lower than God (Heb. 1:13)
- higher than man (Heb. 2:9)
- not to be worshipped (Rev. 19:10)
They are messengers (which is what the word literally means)
- many Bible examples:
- Ex. 3:2 - angel appeared to Moses
- Lk. 1:13 - angel appeared to Zacharias to tell
of the birth of John the Baptist
- Mt. 1:20-25 - told Joseph not to put away Mary
- Lk. 2:12,13 - warned Joseph to flee Herod
- Lk. 22:43 - ministered to Jesus before arrest
- Mt. 28:1-5 - at the tomb of Jesus
- Acts 1:10,11 - at His ascension
They have individual identity
- some are designated by name:
- Michael - Jude 9
- Gabriel - Lk. 1:19
- they apparently have rank:
- Michael is called the "archangel" - Jude 9
- there are many angels
- "innumerable company of angels" - Heb 12:22
- "legions of angels" - Matt. 26:53
- they do not marry - Lk. 20:34-36
- they have free will
- like man, they can choose to obey or disobey
- 2 Peter 2:4
- Jude 6
They have great interest in the salvation of men
- 1 Peter 1:10-12
- Lk. 15:10
- Are there "guardian angels"?
- Mt. 18:10
- Heb. 1:13,14
- they behold all that happens to us
- 1 Cor. 4:9
- 1 Tim. 5:21
They will have a role in judgment
- Matt. 25:31
- Matt. 13:38-42
