Abortion -- When the Womb Becomes a Tomb
INTRODUCTION
1. A step back into history.
1. Dr. Walter Alvarez, the late medical columnist, wrote
in 1970: "It will probably be many years before we
(Physicians) in America can bring ourselves to
chloroform an idiotic infant or to permit a slowly
dying patient to take an overdose of medicine. What we
will first have to train ourselves to do will be to
leave by the patient's bed a lethal drug, which he can
take some night if he so desires. But before this, we
will have to get over our firmly held idea that for
some reason unknown to us, we feel strongly that
suicide is a grievous sin."
2. On February 17, 1972, Dr. William Gaylin, professor of
psychiatry and law at Columbia University, told a
conference of the American Association of University
Women: "It used to be easy to know what we wanted for
our children, and now the best for our children might
mean deciding which ones to kill. We've always wanted
the best for our grandparents, and now that might mean
killing them. We have the awesome knowledge to do
these things, and inevitably we shall be forced to act
on it."
3. In his 30-page paper challenging the "sanctity of life"
principle at the Third Euthanasia Conference, Dec. 5,
1970, Dr. Marvin Kohl said: "The aim of this essay is,
first, to analyze different versions of the sanctity of
life principle and inquire as to what, if any,
justification there is for believing that life is
sacred; and second, to exhibit certain contusions . . .
which appear to be connected with the erroneous notion
that one ought never kill an innocent human being.
"The following arguments are evaluated and rejected:
that only God has absolute dominion over human life .
. . that it is always unjust to kill the innocent.
"In some situations, especially in certain cases of
euthanasia, morality demands the killing of the
innocent."
4. Dr. Lois Lobb, research director on mental illness at
Patton State Hospital in California, told the National
Enquirer, Mar. 25, 1974, that mercy killing "will be a
reality within the next five years".
5. "All the signposts are up", says Dr. Lobb, who believes
the United States is "showing the same sociological
symptoms" as did Germany before the Nazi extermination
campaigns began.
6. "I imagine our mercy killing laws will begin by
legalizing death with dignity," Dr. Lobb declares. =20
"Next I see these laws being expanded to accomplish the
real goal -- get rid of people who are a burden on
society."
7. "Eliminating the helpless will probably come as civil
rights legislation", she speculates, "since a recent
Supreme Court ruling on abortions indicates life is no
longer sacred."
2. News Items:
1. Because of intense opposition, the Upjohn Company gave
up its efforts to introduce an abortion pill
Prostaglandin (Prostin F2 and Prostin E2) in the The
US. Recently our government lifted its opposition to
testing the French abortion Pill in the US. In an
unprecedented move, the Surgeon General authorized the
use of French research to speed up the release of the
pill for use in this country.
2. The Administration has lifted the ban on fetal tissue
research.
3. The United States government recently fined an Oriental
immigrant, confiscated his new tractor (on which he
still owes $36.000) prevented him from planting his
tilled fields, and sentenced him to one year in jail
for running over a Kangaroo Rat.
4. The Federal Courts are jailing poachers for stealing
tortoise eggs. Federal Courts have ruled that tortoise
eggs have the same rights as live tortoises.
5. Congress recently passed a law making it a federal
crime to picket or impede a person's entrance into an
Abortion clinic. The penalties include heavy fines and
a five year jail sentence. This law only applies to
protesters protesting abortion. All other forms of
protest are still protected by the first amendment.
6. In May of 1994, a Wayne County, Michigan jury refused
to enforce the Michigan Assisted Suicide law and found
Jack Kevorkian not guilty of assisted suicide.
3. How do you feel about such statements?=20
4. Where do you see these opinions taking us in the future?
A. OUR UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT OPENED THE DOOR TO ABORTION.
1. January 22, 1973 was one of the blackest days in the
200 year history of the United States.
1. On this day ("Black Monday") our U.S. Supreme
Court ruled that the killing of an unborn baby is
an act protected by the Constitution of the United
States.
2. In this landmark decision the Court decided that
the unborn child is not a "person" in any
"meaningful" or "whole" sense, and therefore is
not protected by the Fourteenth Amendment.
2. Let everybody take note; the Court did not conclude
that "meaningful" or "whole" personhood BEGINS at
birth; it said only that "meaningful" personhood does
not begin BEFORE birth.
1. The difference between these two ideas are
profoundly important.
2. In this ruling the Supreme Court did not recognize
any of us as being persons in the "whole" or
complete sense; it merely ruled out the unborn
child as a person.
3. The question that haunts my mind is, "How long
will it be before this same liberal Supreme Court
opens the door for the killing other segments of
humanity by simply defining their lives as
meaningless or incomplete.
3. QUESTION: Do you know what "constitutional ammendment
the court based to right to abortion?
4. The stage is now set.
1. Whether the justices of our Supreme Court realize
it or not, in sanctioning the mass murder of
millions of unborn children, they opened the door
to the wholesale "termination" of the aged, the
terminally ill, those afflicted with hereditary
diseases, the mentally retarded, the severely
handicapped, and the insane.
2. Also the Supreme Court, by ruling that an unborn
baby is not a "person" and does not have the
protection of the Constitution, has opened the
door to the next chapter in this gruesome story:
experimentation on "live" aborted babies.
3. Indeed, it is already a reality.
4. And why not experiment on them if the unborn baby
is merely a hunk of meat.
5. Many are concerned that women may be tempted to
abort children to sell the "tissue" to research
labs.
6. Some are concerned that unscrupulous doctors will
fool women into having abortions so they can sell
the "tissue."
5. Reported cases of experimentation on "LIVE" aborted
babies:
1. Dr. A. Ammann of the University of California
transplanted the thymus glands of two aborted
babies into two older children. The donors were
killed. (Time Magazine, Feb. 28, 1972, p. 54.)
2. Kidneys from aborted babies are being used to
study male development at Dalhouse University,
Halifax, Nova Scotia, the donor humans are
killed." (British Medical News, April 2, 1973.)
3. Dr. R. Goodlin at Stanford University, California,
did experiments including "slicing open the rib
cage of a still-living human fetus (unborn baby)
in order to observe the heart action . . . some as
old as twenty-four weeks . . . were used." (Sworn
testimony to Mary Swedsen, June 1, 1972.)
4. One woman anesthetist at Magee-Woman's Hospital in
Pittsburgh testified, "It was repulsive to watch
live fetuses (premature infants) being packed in
ice while still moving and trying to breathe, then
being rushed to a laboratory." (Testimony, of Mrs.
W. Pick, anesthetist, Pennsylvania Abortion
Commission, the Pittsburgh Catholic, Mar. 17,
1972.)
5. Drs. Laphom and Marksberry report that they took
human fetus brains and kept them alive as long as
five months in experiments. The donors were
killed. (Science, 1965.)
6. However, the most grisly experimentation that I
have read about was done at the University of
Helsinki, Finland by Dr. Peter Adam, a professor
at Case, Western Reserve University in Cleveland.=20
In this experiment, babies, 12 to 20 weeks of age,
were delivered alive and normal by hysterotomy
(Cesarean section). Their heads were then cut off
and attached to a machine which pumped various
chemicals through the brain circulation of their
severed heads. (Medical World News, June 8, 1973,
p. 21)
6. Such barbarianism is still being practiced in most
countries right now.
1. In April of 1974 the U.S. House of Representatives
voted 281 to 58 to prohibit research on a human
fetus "which has been removed from the womb and
which has a beating heart."
2. But I ask "WHY?" Why restrict doctors at all from
experimenting on live, aborted babies?
3. If an unborn baby is as one doctor put it, "so
much garbage", then why should the government
restrict doctors from doing all of these things? =20
There is no reason!!
4. Legislation like this law prohibiting fetal
experimentation is passed because our Congress has
enough sense to realize (whether the Supreme Court
does or not) that unborn babies are human persons
that should be protected from such cold-blooded
treatment.
5. The Clinton administration has now rescinded the
ban.
B. THE HUMANITY OF THE UNBORN CHILD
1. The whole issue of abortion and experimentation on
premature babies revolves around one simple question:
"Is that which is growing inside of the mother a human
life, or is it merely a 'piece of meat', a 'blob of
protoplasm', or just 'fetal tissue'?"
1. This is the question every person must answer.
2. It is one of the most important questions that you
and I will probably ever be called upon to answer
in our lifetime.
3. Is the unborn being growing within the mother a
HUMAN LIFE?
1. Judge it to be a piece of meat, a blob of
tissue, then vote for abortion-on-demand,
fetal experimentation, and everything else
that goes with it. Certainly God would have
no objections to that.
2. But -- if you judge it to be a HUMAN LIFE,
then before God you must do all within your
power to protect these helpless children.
C. When does science say human life begins?
1. It is both a scientific and Biblical fact that
human life begins at conception.
1. At the point of conception, when the 23
chromosomes of the male sperm unite with the
23 chromosomes of the female ovum, there is
created a new being that had never existed
before.
2. From this point (conception) not one cell
from the mother or the father will be added
to this new being.
3. All that this new human being needs is
nourishment and time to grow.
4. The First International Conference on
Abortion held in Washington, D.C. in October,
1967 was composed of authorities in the
fields of biochemistry, obstetrics,
gynecology, genetics, etc., and here is their
conclusion:
"The majority (19 to 1) of our group could
find no point in time between the union of
sperm and egg, or at least the blastocyst
stage, and the birth of the infant at which
point we could say that this was not human
life . . . The changes occurring between
implantation, a six-week embryo, a six-month
fetus, a one-week-old child, or a mature
adult are merely stages of development and
maturation."
D. What does the Bible have to say about the life in the womb
-- Is it human?
1. In the record of the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of
God, as given in Matt. 1:18-25, verse 18 says, "When as
his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they
came together, she was found WITH CHILD OF THE HOLY
GHOST."
1. Ask yourself this question: "Was the 'child of
the Holy Ghost' in Mary's womb merely 'fetal
tissue' or 'a blob of protoplasm'?"
2. "What if Mary, at the insistence of Joseph, had
obtained an abortion?" "Would an abortion have
meant only 'terminating a fetus'?"
3. Such an idea is not only unscriptural and ungodly;
it is downright ABSURD!!
2. In Luke 1:39-44 we read about Mary going to see her
cousin Elizabeth who was at that time six-months
pregnant.
1. In verse 41 the Bible says, "when Elizabeth heard
the salutation of Mary, the BABE (that is spelled,
B-A-B-E) leaped in her womb."
2. Again in verse 44 the Bible records Elizabeth as
saying, "the BABE leaped in my womb for JOY."
3. Just exactly what was it that leaped in
Elizabeth's womb? A piece of meat, some fetal
tissue, the "product of pregnancy"? Just what was
it?
4. I'll take what God said about it. He called it a
B-A-B-E, a baby.
3. By divine inspiration Luke used this same word,
"brefos", which is translated "babe" in Luke 1:41,44
when he wrote Luke 2:16, "And they came with haste, and
found Mary, and Joseph, and the BABE brefos lying in
the manger."
1. Therefore, we have the word of God Himself that
the life which is in the womb is recognized by Him
as a BABE, just as much so as a new-born baby
lying in a crib.
2. If you care to check, this same Greek word is
translated "babe" again in Luke 2:12 and I Peter
2:2; "child" in II Tim. 3:15; "infant" in Luke
18:15; and "young child" in Acts 7:19.
4. Many other passages demonstrate that God recognized the
life within the womb as human.
1. God told Jeremiah, the prophet, "Before I formed
thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou
camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee,
and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations."
(Jer. 1:4,5)
2. Read what David said about God's recognizing him
in the womb. (Psalms 139:13-16.)
E. Human life is a continuum from conception until death.
1. Conception: Human life begins.
2. 18-25 days: Heart begins to beat.
3. 6 weeks: Baby begins to move; brain waves are already
present and can be recorded on an electroencephalogram.
4. 7 weeks: If the baby's lip is tickled, he will pull
away.
5. 8 weeks: Grabs, swims freely, electrocardiogram can be
used to record heart impulses.
6. 10 weeks: At this stage the baby is so perfectly formed
that he even has fingerprints.
7. 12 weeks: Breathes (fluid), sucks thumb, swallows,
tastes, cries, sleeps and wakes, all organ systems
function including mental.
8. Beyond 12 weeks: Nothing new is formed, the baby begins
to grow rapidly.
9. Birth: Exists from the womb; breathes air; takes his
food by mouth.
10. 1 year: Walks.
11. 2 years: Talks.
12. 7 years: Reads and writes.
13. 9-15 years: Develops sexually.
14. 18 years: Physical adulthood.
15. 70+ years: Old age.
AT WHAT AGE WOULD YOU DRAW THE LINE AND SAY THAT A PERSON WAS NOT
HUMAN?
F. HOW ABORTIONS ARE DONE
1. There are five basic types of abortions: (1) Suction,
(2) D & C, (3) Prostaglandin, (4) Salt-poisoning, and
(5) hysterotomy.
2. Doctors perform a suction abortion by first paralyzing
the muscle at the womb opening (cervical muscle), and
then it is stretched open.
1. He then inserts a hollow plastic tube with a
knife-like edge on the tip, into the womb.
2. The suction tears the baby into pieces, and the
scraps are then sucked into a bottle and disposed
of.
3. Pictures of suction abortions show tiny bodies
that have been ripped to pieces, with little arms
torn from their sockets, and rib cages pulled
apart.
3. The second type of abortion is the dilatation and
curettage, better known as a D & C.
1. When this operation is performed for reasons of
abortion, a surgical instrument is inserted into
the womb and the baby is literally scraped out
piece by piece.
2. Care is taken to remove all of the baby's parts
because of the danger of infection if not cleaned
out completely.
3. In order to assure that all of the baby's parts
have been removed a nurse is often asked to
reassemble the body and check for missing parts.
4. The prostaglandin method uses a special drug produced
by the Upjohn Company of Kalamazoo, Mich.
1. The chemical, called Prostin F2 Alpha, when it
works, will produce labor and delivery at any
stage of pregnancy.
2. Most babies, if they are large enough to withstand
the trauma of labor, are born alive.
3. Of course this "complication" is dealt with by
merely setting the child aside and allowing him to
die.
5. The fourth type of abortion is called the
salt-poisoning method.
1. This is the second most widely used form of
abortion and is only used after the child is, at
least, 16 weeks old.
2. A large needle is inserted through the abdominal
wall of the mother and into the baby's amniotic
sac.
3. A concentrated salt solution is injected into this
fluid surrounding the baby.
4. The baby breathes and swallows it, is poisoned,
struggles, sometimes convulses, and finally dies a
horribly painful death.
5. The following day the mother delivers a dead baby.
6. Babies aborted by this method are usually called
"candy apple babies" because of their bright red
color, a condition caused by the caustic salt
solution which literally burns away the child's
outer layer of skin.
6. The fifth method of abortion is known as a hysterotomy
or Cesarean section.
1. Like the Cesarean section delivery, an opening is
made in the abdominal wall, and the baby is
removed.
2. The baby and the after-birth are discarded.
3. Babies aborted by this method are almost always
born alive.
4. They will move about, try to breathe, and some
even cry.
5. One doctor I read about who was disturbed by an
aborted baby's attempts to cry simply dropped the
after-birth (placenta) over the child's face and
smothered it to death.
7. Abortion Facts:
1. They occur at the rate of 4,400 every day in the
United States.
2. Less than 2% are don because the pregnancy
threatens the mothers life or resulted from rape
or incest.
3. Abortion is legal for any reason -- including
gender bias.
4. The repeat rate is growing. 40% of women having
abortions have had at least one previous abortion.
5. Approximately 30 million abortions have been
performed in the US.
8. That means that over a million and a half innocent,
unborn children are killed every year in this country.
1. It was reported this month by Dr. Charles Flowers
of the University of Alabama Medical Center that
over 2,300 abortions were performed in that
hospital alone the year, 1975.
2. This figure was in contrast to the total number of
7 that were done in that hospital prior to the
Supreme Court's ruling, Jan. 22, 1973.
CONCLUSION
1. When will the slaughter of the innocent unborn stop?
2. In the last few years we here in America, the land of the
Free, have killed more innocent children than all of the
Jews killed by Hitler and his forces.
3. I am sure that there will be no let up in the killing until
you and I do something about it.
4. One day you and I are going to face God in Judgment and give
account for sitting back and letting the poor, helpless
children of this world be slaughtered by the millions.
5. I close with these sobering thoughts from Dr. R. A. Gallop,
demographer and head of the Food Science Department at the
University of Manitoba:
"Once you permit the killing of the unborn child, there
will be no stopping. There will be no age limit. You are
setting off a chain reaction that will eventually make you
the victim.
Your children will kill you because you permitted the
killing of their brothers and sisters. Your children will
kill you because they will not want to support you in your
old age. Your children will kill you for your homes and
estates.
If a doctor will take money for killing the innocent in the
womb, he will kill you with a needle when paid by your
children. This is the terrible nightmare you are creating
for the future."
(Extensive quotations were taken from the books: "The Mercy
Killers" by Dr. Paul Marx, and "Handbook on Abortion" by Dr. and
Mrs. J.C. Wilke., and notes by Ray Dutton, Sixth Avenue church of
Christ, Jasper Alabama)
