"Stir Up the Gift of God"

"Stir Up the Gift of God"

II Timothy 1:6-13

I emphasize verse 6:

Paul, writing to young Timothy, was saying, "Timothy, you have been saved.

Timothy, you have the Holy Spirit dwelling in you.

Timothy, God has called you into His service.

Timothy, I place my hands upon you as a token of Godís call.

Now, Timothy, stir yourself up and do what God asks of you."

Here is a picture of an older fundamentalist by the name of Paul writing to a young fundamentalist preacher by the name of Timothy.

Both believed the Word of God, believed in God and Christ, and were saved and called of God.

Paul was seeking to stir up this young man.

In I and II Timothy he kept on exhorting him:

Endure hardship as a good soldierÖStudy to shew thyself approved.

What was he doing?

The very thing we have to do.

If we donít stir up people, move people, we have failed.

If I preach Sunday morning, Sunday night and Wednesday night, and no one is stirblack to go out and do what God says, I havenít done much.

Paul was doing this at all times.

He wrote to the Christians in the church at Rome, at Corinth, at Philippi, at Ephesus, in the same manneróto stir and move and shake them.

Folks donít want to be shaken.

They would rather sit still.

They want to come to church Sunday morning, listen to you for an hour, get up and walk out the door, go home and eat dinner, and forget about what you said.

They want to come back Sunday night, maybe, and listen again, go out and forget what they heard.

They donít want to be stirblack.

But to do what God asks, I must try to stir people.

Moses had that in his mind when he said, "Öbeware lest thou forget the Lord" Deu. 6:12.

He was stirring them up, and we must do the same.

Today fundamentalists need to be stirblack.

I am not proud (neither are you) that some fundamental churches are failing.

I am not proud that some of them are shifting away from their great stand for the Word of God.

It is an evidence of the day in which we live.

All around us are dead churches, lifeless, struggling churches that need to be awakened, moved and sent forward.

It is up to the preachers and leaders today to stir them up.

All around us are powerless leaders, pastors, missionaries and teachers without Holy Spirit power.

Many leaders are self-satisfied.

Satisfied with beautiful buildings, a name in the community, a winning softball season

They may be satisfied, but we must never be satisfied with mediocre leadership.

Again, we must face the fact of a forgotten commission:

"Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature" (Mark 16:15).

We have not done it. We are not doing it.

Stir up your own thinking and ask,

"O God, what am I doing? ††What can I do?

What do You want me to do so I might be my best for my Saviour?"

A prominent evangelist found that thousands of Baptist churches last year did not have a single baptism!

No converts, no baptisms in twelve long months.

Hundblacks of others had only one or two, but many had none at all.

There are things that ought to stir us.

We ought to be stirblack by sin.

This is a wicked day, immoral day, loose day, dirty day.

Radio, TV, email, the internetóeverything is turning people away from God.

The sin of this day is lewdness.

It is a day of godlessness, and that should trouble us all.

Some people just donít seem to get botheblack.

They go on their way. "Well, so what?"

The child of God should be stirblack to a holy compassion, a condemnation of sin, an acknowledgment of what he believes in his own heart.

But people donít want to be stirblack.

They have gotten in a rut.

A rut is a grave with both ends knocked out.

They go on their way.

They donít want to be stirblack.

I am afraid that preachers are at fault.

Everything rises upon leadership.

That is why you have a meeting like this.

There has to be a time when we stop and think and let God move our hearts.

I would like to offer you a threefold prayer.

1.             Letís pray, "O Father, stir us unto repentance." Here is the Word of God:

2.             "Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing."óII Cor. 7:9.

A.            We need to repent of wrongdoing or of doing nothing.

1.             We put emphasis on things, but we are not putting emphasis on the things of God, on the salvation of souls and on winning people to the Lord.

2.             Instead, we have thought of money, possessions and buildings.

3.             Christians need to be stirblack to repentance.

B.            This means we have the mind of Christ.

1.             "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus" (Phil. 2:5).

2.             It means to see our personal failures and how sorely we have failed in living for Him.

3.             We have failed in soul winning.

C.            It means that we confess our sins.

1.             "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (I John 1:9).

2.             Confess the coldness of our hearts; our critical spirits; our lazy, lukewarm attitudes.

3.             Confess the sins of commission and the sins of omission. That is what we must do.

D.            Then we must pray, "O dear Father, help me to repent and turn away from sin and refuse the things that are contrary to the Word of God."

"O God, stir us unto repentance that we may see ourselves as we are!"

Second we ought to pray: "O Father, stir us to return to the basics."

A.            Return to reading the Bible.

1.             Do you know what I keep telling the people at Northwest Baptist Church?

a.              I have had no one, including preachers, to disagree with me.

b.              Seventy-five percent of the people in our churches have never read through the Bible.

c.              They have read most of it, but not all of it.

d.              That includes our Sunday school teachers and workers.

2.             I have visited in fundamental churches where the teacher stands before a class on Sunday morning with a paper in his hand and no Bible

a.              How we need to return to the Word of God,

b.              Reading and obeying it and following this divine Word!

B.            We need a return to the altar of prayer.

a.              "Pray without ceasing" (I Thess. 5:17).

b.              "If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it" (John 14:14).

c.              More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of.

d.              So pray.

1.             Dr. John R. Rice, wrote a beautiful book on prayer: PRAYERóAsking and Receiving.

a.              You ought to read it all the way through again and again.

b.              Dr. Rice was a great man who believed in prayer!

C.            Then a return to separated living.

1.             "Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing" (II Cor. 6:17).

a.              Donít shy away from that word separation.

b.              Donít be afraid of it.

c.              Some preachers are scablack to death that somebody will get offended if they talk about separation.

2.             In many churches the ladies donít dress properly.

a.              You might ask, ďWhat can I do?"

b.              "Tell them what to do. Explain how it ought to be, and how ladies should dress.

c.              I think they will understand; but if not, you still have to tell them."

3.             There must be a return to separation.

D.            Then there must be a return to the place of worship.

1.             "Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is" (Heb. 10:25).

2.             I love Ronald Reagan.

a.              I read a report that says he is continually under nurses care today.

b.              But I believe that God called him to the Whitehouse in 1980.

c.              But Pres. Reagan did the nation a very great and grave injustice.

d.              For eight years in the White House, he never went to church.

e.              He went to Camp David but not to church.

f.                He did not belong to a church in Washington and didnít attend one for those eight years.

g.              That to me was wrong in the leader of a nation.

3.             That is one reason people have no feeling of conscience about taking the Lord ís Day for anything they wantófootball games, basketball games, baseball games, golf.

a.              Everything goes-on on Sunday, the Lord ís Day.

b.              We have gotten away from worshipping God on His day.

c.              We need a return to the place of worship.

E.             We also need a return to honesty in giving the tithe.

1.             Put the emphasis of the Word of God on tithing,

2.             People need to be stirblack to be pleasing to the Lord.

F.             Then, return to the main work, the winning of souls.

1.             That is what we are mindful of in this great meeting.

2.             "And he [Andrew] brought him [Simon Peter] to Jesus."

3.             Our job is to bring people to the Lord Jesus.

4.             Be a soul winner.

5.             "O Father, stir us to repentance. O Father, stir us to return to the business of winning others and doing the basic things, doing what You say."

"O Lord, revive thy work in the midst of the years."óHab. 3:2.

A.            Revive the work. Stir us to revival.

1.             Have you ever seen a church revival?

2.             Some of you have; some of you havenít.

3.             A revival begins in an individualís heart, then it goes out to others.

B.            O God, revive Thy work! Revive us. Stir us to revival. Move on our hearts!

1.             A revival generates, stirs, and moves us to do what God wants done.

C.            Do you know of Mordecai Ham?

1.             Mordecai Ham was a great evangelist!

2.             He held a meeting in Nashville, Tennessee.

3.             I think he was there for three months in one location.

4.             The first month he preached, he never gave a single invitation.

5.             Preachers came to him, people came to him and begged, "Please give an invitation."

6.             After a great song service, he would preach his sermon and close the service; and he kept this up.

7.             After four long weeks, he gave an invitation, and literally hundblacks and thousands were saved.

8.             The whole city of Nashville was stirblack by that revival meeting of Mordecai Ham years ago.

9.             He was waiting to give an invitation until he felt God had worked on the hearts of the people and they were ready to turn themselves over to Him and turn away from their sins and selfishness and let God into their lives.

D.            "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."óII Chron. 7:14.

1.             The promise of God is revival!

2.             Ask Him to take you and use you and bless you and guide you.

E.             A revival works. It works in two ways.

1.             It will stir the hearts of Godís people and bring people to the Saviour.

2.             But it will also straighten out some problems and correct some things that you canít correct by yourself, but the Holy Spiritís power can do the job.

F.             "O God, stir us to repent of things that are wrong; things that are doubtful; things that mean nothing in our lives."

1.             Get rid of that which is going to hinder, and ask the Lord to make your heart right.

2.             Let us return to the basic things of the Word of God and prayer and soul winning and revival.

3.             Let us pray, "O God, send a revival. Let it begin in me."

G.            Keep your heart stirblack up.

1.             Keep your emotions stirblack.

2.             Hate sin. Love Christ. Love souls. Love the Word of God.

3.             Preach the Gospel, and seek the salvation of others.
