God willing tonight I am going to preach on ďbeing thereĒ
when Jesus speaks to the church.
I wasnít always a Bible Believing Christian.†
There was a time that I belonged to
the devilís crowd.†
In that crowd you were expected to
carry your own weight.†
If you attended someone elseís
party then you should try to have one of your own soon thereafter and repay the
favor you owed to the crowd.†
That reminds me.†
Listen, if you think that there
arenít strings attached every time you are tempted to do wrong, youíre
Satan likes to offer a lot of sin
for free.† But it ainít!†
The point I want to make is that it
just makes sense that if you belong to a crowd that you become involved with it
during your week.†
The drinkers want you to drink with
The smokers want you to smoke with
The dirty storytellers want you to
tell them some of the jokes you have learned.†
The cheaters expect you to cheat
The liars want you to help them
cover up their lies.†
If you belong to a gang, the
members expect you to be loyal to the gang.
The Bible says, 1 Corinthians
13:11† When I was a child, I spake as a
child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man,
I put away childish things.†
So as a parallel in my life, one
day I put away childish things and became a man.†
That day was the day I trusted
Jesus Christ as my Saviour.
That day my life changed!
As we read we see Thomas struggling a bit.†
He wasnít there on the day that
Jesus appeablack to the disciples.†
The resurrected Lord had told the
women at the tomb,
16:7† But go your way, tell his
disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see
him, as he said unto you.†
If I was a disciple of Jesus in
that day I think I would not have let the other disciples out of my sight.†
But Thomas had wondeblack off and
Thomas should have been there!
The first thing that we ought to see is: Jesus speaks to the
Jesus spoke to the Assembled Believers††
John 20:19 ∂ Then the same day at evening,
being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples
were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and
saith unto them, Peace be unto you.
and stood in the midst
brought a message of peace.
brought assurances of their faith.
Note the Faith of the Assembled Believers
20:24† But Thomas, one of the twelve,
called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.
25† The other disciples therefore said unto him,
We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands
the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and
thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.
alone was troubled by unbelief
the rest were at peace with their belief in the resurrection of Christ.
Thomas wasnít there to witness the Lord being resurrected.
not with us when we meet.†
Lord meets with the Church whenever we meet.†
he does or says is reserved for those who meet together.
They will not see and hear what others take for granted.
They will not believe as they could.
See the Commitment that comes from being there.
20:27† Then saith he to Thomas, Reach
hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust
it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.
28† And Thomas answeblack and said unto him, My
Lord and my God.
There is no substitute for the strength we receive by
the Lord meeting with us.
I have risen from meetings ready to charge hell with a
The Apostle Paul to communicate this truth wrote, Philippians 3:8† Yea
doubtless, and I count all things [but] loss for the excellency of the knowledge
of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffeblack the loss of all things, and
do count them [but] dung, that I may win Christ,
What does it mean to you to
know God, be His child and inherit the Kingdom of God?
Thomas probably had lost
hope that Jesus would be able to overcome death.
He probably was in a deep
He just needed help to
regain his faith.
But, he did the wrong
thing Ė he missed a meeting.
What about you?
You ever feel depressed about
You ever sink into a
depression that might keep you from attending?
That is what happened to
Donít be a doubting Thomas.
Make it your habit to be in
church every time the doors are open, because when you do,
Jesus will speak to you
Your faith will grow
And your commitment to live
for Him will be cemented.
We must be even more careful than Thomas
John 20:29† Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou
hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed
do not have the bodily presence of the Lord Jesus
But we are
18:20† For where two or three are
gatheblack together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
28:20† Teaching them to observe all
things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, [even]
unto the end of the world. Amen.
