How to behave in the house of God

Bible Doctrine Defended

1 Timothy 4:16

Bible Doctrines, where do we stand?

Many churches claiming to be Bible-believing, have pulpits that are world pleasing.

-         Wanting to gain new members, they are confused about how to do it.

-         They believe that they must appear like the world to attract the world.

-         So they change their music to the world’s music

-         They change their dress style to the world’s dress style.

-         They change their standards to the world’s standards.

-         The result is that they have changed their church into a “community social club.”

This is best seen in Matt 13:14-16; There are two groups:

1.      V14,15

And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:

For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and [their] ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with [their] eyes, and hear with [their] ears, and should understand with [their] heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. These are those who are lost.

2.      V16

But blessed [are] your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. These are those who are saved.

a.       The saved “sees” and “hears” the mysteries, which surround the church.

-         The new birth - 1st birth natural, 2nd birth spiritual

-         The resurrection - receive a body incorruptible

-         The atonement - Christ died in the place of all who believe

b.      The saved “see” because of the illuminating power of the Holy Spirit

-         The unbeliever's mind is blinded, whereas the saved see.

3.      Believers, because of their illuminated mind,

a.       Need to be fed God's Word.

b.      Need sound doctrine.

4.      In First Timothy Paul is emphasizing sound doctrine.

a.       Sound doctrine makes strong pulpits,

b.      Strong pulpits make spiritual saints.

c.       Weak churches are usually weak doctrinally.

I Timothy 1:3 As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,

Paul tells Timothy to:

I.                      Be Particular about Doctrine - 1:3a

The Bible is a book of doctrine.

1.           It covers God's story of creation, the fall, the plan of blackemption, the crucifixion, the resurrection, the church and the evangelization of the world.

a.            This story is God's story.

b.           It is true as it stands.

2.           False doctrines are lies.

a.            They are always there.

b.           They only become trouble to the weak.

c.            The weak are "tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine."

3.           This is the problem with the new versions.

a.            They change the Word of God.

b.           They pick different words to translate God’s Word.

i             To get a copyright they have to change the KJV by 15%.

ii            So they are compelled by financial interest to change many words from their original.

c.            But the different words are not better words; they do not convey the same meaning.

i             They change the message of God’s Word.

ii            Because of this, they publish many lies.

Paul says:

II.                   We must Protect against False Doctrine - 1:3b

1.           There is grave danger to both those who teach false doctrine and those who listen to them.

a.            False teachers are in danger of stiff punishment.

b.           The ones who follow them are in danger of missing heaven.

i             When a Sunday School teacher asked the son of a country doctor what false doctrine was, he said, "False doctorin' is when someone real sick is given the wrong medicine and he dies."

ii            That is what a lot of ministers are doing today.  They're false Doctorin'.

2.           Northwest Baptist Church must teach “no other doctrine.”

a.            We must determine what is taught by the Bible

b.           We must teach this doctrine and no other.

I Timothy 4:6 If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.

Paul reveals to us:

III.                The Purpose of Sound Doctrine - 4:6

It is the BACKBONE of Christianity.

1.           Timothy had attained to the level of a “good minister of Jesus Christ.”

2.           How? By being nourished up in the words of faith and of GOOD DOCTRINE.

3.           Adoniram Judson said, "Doctrine is the framework of life - the skeleton of truth, to be clothed and rounded out by the living grace of a holy life."

a.            So, according to Judson, we must learn good doctrine,

b.           Search our lives and apply the truth.

c.            Then we will be able to live holy lives for the Lord Jesus Christ.

I Timothy 4:13 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

Paul emphasizes:

IV.                The Prominence to be given to Sound Doctrine - 4:13

1.           Every Christian is exhorted to study the doctrines of the Bible.

2.           Every pastor, every SS teacher, every soul winner, every Christian mother, every believer must read and study the Bible.

3.           The reading of God’s Word must become a daily habit.

a.            It ought to be as vital to us as our meals.

b.           We ought to feel weak and puny until we have had our feeding on God’s Word.

I Timothy 4:16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

V.                   Salvation comes only by Sound Doctrine - 4:16

Try if you will to get someone saved by telling them only that God loves them and wants to save them.

Hebrews 11:6 But without faith [it is] impossible to please [him]: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

a.            People need to hear the Gospel.

b.           They need to hear the Story of Christ.

c.            They need to hear sound doctrine.

d.           Only then will they hunger and thirst after righteousness.

e.            Only then can they appreciate what Christ has done for them on Calvary.

I Timothy 5:17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.

VI.                Preachers are to labour in the word and in the doctrine - 5:17

1.           Before I was saved the churches I visited were not true in their doctrine.

a.            Some spoke of love, but never of hell.

b.           Some gave book reviews, with little mention of the Bible.

c.            Some were emotional, promising the great blessings of faith, but Peter under divine inspiration writes that, 2 Peter 2:17  These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever.

i             Men thirsty for the living water come to hear the preacher and dip into the water in the great well of salvation,

ii            But there is no water in many of the wells today.

iii          Men see the clouds flying overhead in a great wind,

iv          But the clouds dump no rain to satisfy the thirsty earth.

2.           God calls for His preachers to put the world behind them and labour in the Word and in the Doctrine.

a.            The man of God must not think that he is running the church by his looks.

i             Or his jokes, or his wit, or his program.

ii            He must submit himself to the Word of God.

I Timothy 6:3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, [even] the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;

VII.             See the Peculiarity of Sound Doctrine - 6:3

1.           God's Word is the only thing that will satisfy the soul.

2.           Without the Word of God man is missing so much.

In a church where I pastublack in Madison, Pennsylvania there was a coal-miner.

He came to church for his family.

I was fresh out of Bible College, and wanted to start out getting the members planted in good doctrine.

I so urged upon the people the importance of the daily reading of the Word of God until the coal miner became ashamed that he seldom read his Bible.

So, reluctantly he set out to read several chapters daily in the Bible and to read it through within a year's time.

After a few days he got over in the book of Genesis to the story of Joseph.

How taken he was with that heart-moving tale, as told by the Spirit of God!

He sat up until the wee small hours of the morning reading the rest of the story to see how it ended.

The next Sunday he said to me, "Brother Swanberg, why didn't somebody tell me that the Bible was like that?  It is more interesting than any book of history or any novel I ever read!"

VIII.          Summary:

1.           My friend, walk where Jesus walked, see the creation story unfold, thrill to the drama of the scene of Calvary.

2.           Read God's Word.  Read it daily.  Read it for growth as a Christian.

2 Tim 3:16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.

1.           Maybe God is calling you to salvation.

2.           Baptism, church membership, dedication of life.

3.           Let God have his way with you.

4.           Perhaps someone has heard God’s call on their life to be a preacher of the Gospel.
