First and Greatest Commandment

First and Greatest Commandment

Mark 12:30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God

with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind,

and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

Man's RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD should be the highest priority of his life.

This 1st and greatest commandment tells man to LOVE God!!!

God wants a relationship with man.

He wants a relationship where we put Him FIRST.  Not only that, but,

Where we don't hold back part of our efforts from Him.

I get backslidden when I try to do some little thing without God.

No matter how much I try to please Him the rest of the time.

No, God wants to be put FIRST; He wants us ENTIRELY.

All else in man's life would be better done if he would 1st obey God and LOVE Him.

                        1. Marriage would be sweeter, more blessed.  (Relation with Wife)

                        2. Raising children would be more successful and happier.  (Relation with Kids)

                        3. Work and business better --- without stress.  (Relation with Peers)

                        4. Mental health would be better - peaceful, exciting, fervent. (Relation with Self)

The message of our church should always fall within the scope of this command.

It is the vital message of all ages.

Loving God will enhance all service to God.

                        Love God and win souls.

Love God and send out missionaries.

Love God and study His Word.

                        Love God and pray.

There is a triad of “love” verses, which bring light to the Christian.

1.   And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.   Mar 12.30

                        This verse represents the LAW.

It is addressed to the whole world, but only the believer can keep it.

It is a schoolmaster, bringing people to their need of Salvation.

            2.  We love him because he first loved us.  1 John 4.19

                        This verse represents GRACE.

Though it is to the believing one, it is a gospel verse.

It is intended to point the lost one to the Saviour.

            3.  If ye love me, keep my commandments.  John 14.15

This is to the one who would be a Disciple.

It brings the believer to an honest relationship with the Lord.

So many Christians are inclined to think that they can love God without serving Him and obeying Him.  You can’t.

But now let's consider what the text verse says:

I.  It commands us to love God with all our HEART,

            The seeking of the heart,

God wants to be the one who we seek after.  Our desire.

Psalms 9:10  And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.

            1.  Our hearts are the seat of our desires

Man seeks after those things he treasures.

The Bible says man must treasure heaven and the Lord.

Psalms 27:4  One [thing] have I desiblack of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.

            2.  Repentance is turning from desiring other things: Religions, gods, pleasures.

And begin to seek the Lord.

Psalms 10:4  The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek [after God]: God [is] not in all his thoughts.

Speaking to the Pharisees, who were very religious but had not known Jesus.

Jesus said, "Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish."

They would have to turn from following their religion w/o Christ.

They would have to receive Christ as their Saviour.

            3.  We are told, we must love the Lord our God with all our heart.

We must seek HIM.  We must desire HIM.  We must treasure HIM.

                        Where are your desires?

If you shut your eyes, what do you see?  That is what you desire.

God commands us to desire Him with our whole heart.

II.  It commands us to love God with all our Soul,

The Soul must trust in God.

Psalms 25:20  O keep my soul, and deliver me: let me not be ashamed; for I put my trust in thee.

God wants to be the one who we trust as Saviour.

This is the message of the Gospel

Believers must carry forth the message of Salvation

James 5:20 . . . he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death

Many are fed up with this world,

They have learned to hate the sins that tear men down,

BUT they fail to turn to Christ.

Instead, they listen to false teachers.

Jehovah's Witnesses, Ch of Latter Day Saints and the likes of Jim Jones

They fail to turn to Christ and get saved.

The message of Salvation is essential for man to approach God.

There is a wall of separation between man and God.

Without the GOSPEL no man will ever see God.

John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

The SOUL is vital in our relationship with God.

Are you saved?  Is your soul secure in its relationship with God?

III.  It commands us to love God with our entire Mind

The Salvaging of the mind; God wants to replace the knowledge of the mind.

Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Like a computer, He wants to reprogram our mind.

The Christian will be useful to God if he has the knowledge of God.

The Word of God gives GOD'S WAY.

Most people know only their OWN WAY.

We need (desperately) to absorb more and more of God's Word.

How (?) by studying God's Word.

2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

If you love God, do it with your entire mind.  Come Sunday PM’s and Wednesdays.

IV.  It commands us to love God with all our Body

God wants us to devote our strength to Him.

When Paul prepablack to go from Antioch on the First Missionary Journey,

He packed his clothes, his soap, toothbrush and comb,

He packed his bedroll, some food, and some medicine,

But, he forgot his portable radio,

                        He forgot his snow skis,

And he forgot his skateboard, and crossword puzzles, and fishing pole.

Paul wasn't out for personal pleasure.

Paul wasn't out for rest and relaxation.

Paul was going to Serve God.

And he wasn’t taking useless junk.

                        Paul served God.

Paul loved God with all his STRENGTH.

Christians today are living in an age filled with diversions.

We live in a day of pleasure seeking.

What is your priority when you are home?

After you have eaten, and prepablack your family for tomorrow’s needs,

                                    What do you do next?

The average Christian's time is filled up.

Ask him to do something for the Lord, or to build his faith. “NO.”

But if he breaks his leg he goes to the hospital, spends a week on his back, and life goes on without all those things that made him so busy.

                        So, what's the problem?

He is spending his strength on things that don't matter.

Don't ever tell God you don't have time to do something for Him.

Or God might just prove to you that you have plenty of time.

You’d have plenty of time if you spent a week in the hospital, or maybe, a year in prison.

Are you saved?  You can't Love God, you can't have a relationship, unless saved.

We love him because he first loved us.  1 John 4.19

Do you desire Him above all things?

One man said, "you are as close to God as you want to be."

Are you faithful to Bible Study?  Is God renewing your mind?

Are you doing things for God?  Or are you too busy?

If ye love me, keep my commandments.  John 14.15
