Godly Thinking

Offering Your Daily Life to Your LORD

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, (1) whatsoever things are true, (2) whatsoever things [are] honest, (3) whatsoever things [are] just, (4)whatsoever things [are] pure, (5) whatsoever things [are] lovely, (6) whatsoever things [are] of good report; (7) if [there be] any virtue, and (8) if [there be] any praise, (conclusion) think on these things.

People have come up with differing ideas of how to keep watch on the tongue.

Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?

“Hear no evil, see no evil, and speak no evil!”

But the Bible has a list of things that will truely curb the tongue.

            Yes they will work.

It is because they deal with the heart.

The heart is the source of all that proceeds from the tongue.

In this verse we have Eight Things that will,

            1. Help you to serve God in your daily life,

            2. And keep you from unnecessarily offending people.

We need to make notes on this list:

I.                    True - Not being ignorant of, or unaware of true knowledge.

A.                 What is Truth?

1.                  Truth is whatever God has established.

2.                  What happens if after spending a lifetime on this earth as a guest of the creator,

a.                   One day He asks you to give account of the Truth you have learned,

b.                  And all you can say is, “I don’t know.”

3.                  God has made His truth known in THIS BOOK.

a.                   If man has spent his life ignoring God’s Word; then that settles it doesn’t it?

b.                  But just so we all understand; God holds us accountable for knowing what is in our King James Bible.

B.                 Ephesians 4:25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

C.                 Ephesians 6:14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

D.                 The Bible says, “ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”  John 8:32

E.                  1 John 2:4  He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

II.                 Honest - Honorable, Venerable, Not risking loss of reputation by deceit.

A.                 Honesty is dealing openhandedly with others.

1.                  Never tricking others, deceiving them or misleading them.

2.                  If someone cannot handle the truth, don’t tell them anything.

B.                 Romans 12:17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.

C.                 II Corinthians 8:21 Providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.

D.                 Hebrews 13:18 Pray for us: for we trust we have a good conscience, in all things willing to live honestly.

III.               Just - Treating everyone equally and fairly.

A.                 Man seems always to have someone whom he favors.

1.                  Others of his nationality, his race, from his state, or university, or even high school.

2.                  Maybe someone from his town, neighborhood, quite often his family.

3.                  We are to be just with all.

B.                 Proverbs 11:1 A false balance [is] abomination to the LORD: but a just weight [is] his delight.

C.                 Luke 2:25 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name [was] Simeon; and the same man [was] just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.

D.                 Luke 23:50  And, behold, [there was] a man named Joseph, a counsellor; [and he was] a good man, and a just:

E.                  Acts 10:22 And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee.

IV.              Pure - Innocent of sinfulness, chaste, clean, sinning not.

A.                 We must be aware of temptations.  Name them as such and hate them.

1.                  See Satan as the author of every temptation.

2.                  One thought of him stalking me, does it every time.

B.                 Titus 2:14 Who gave himself for us, that he might blackeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

C.                 II Peter 3:1 This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in [both] which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:

D.                 I John 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.  2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.  3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

V.                 Lovely - Forward to show friendliness.  Drawing near to another, in place, concerns, and respect

A.                 Loneliness is not a disease.  Many are lonely because of circumstances in life.

1.                  There is no reason to be lonely.  Be Lovely!

2.                  It’s OK!  It’s not wrong to be friendly.

3.                  If there is any place on earth you can trust to experiment with friendliness, it’s here.

B.                 I Peter 4:8 And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.

VI.              Good Report - Any favorable reputation of, ‘Good fame.’

A.                 People work hard to make a good name for themselves.

1.                  Nothing is more discouraging for them than to ignore their efforts.

2.                  Notice who people are.  Take time to watch and see them.

3.                  Think on how wonderful people are.

4.                  Bumper Sticker: “Business is Great, Life is Fantastic and People are Wonderful.”

5.                  We need positive thoughts in our outlook.

B.                 Acts 6:3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.

C.                 Acts 10:22 And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee.

D.                 I Thessalonians 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.

E.                  Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.  2 For by it the elders obtained a good report.

VII.           Virtue - Valour, excellence (eg. Manliness, femininity); basically, strength of character.

A.                 The titles, Ladies and Gentlemen, are reserved in my thinking for those with virtue.

1.                  Despite the sin of this age, for all ages have had great sin, we can live virtuously.

2.                  When others about us sell themselves off cheaply to common ways, we can hold true.

3.                  All other efforts to live godly will come to naught without this.

B.                 Proverbs 12:4 A virtuous woman [is] a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed [is] as rottenness in his bones.

C.                 II Peter 1:3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that [pertain] unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:  4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

VIII.        Praise - Commendation, Recognition of worth or achievement

A.                 It doesn’t say to always praise others.

1.                  Sometime that is objectionable.

2.                  Think on the praise of others.

3.                  It will come out ‘between the lines,’ which is never objectionable.

B.                 Proverbs 31:31 Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

C.                 Romans 13:3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same.
