Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day

Luke 1, Matthew 2

Mothers Day, the day when we remember all mother did for us, and all she taught us.

And that is a lot!

1.      Mother taught us logic. Remember? "Because I say so, that’s why!"

2.      Mother taught us about the weather: "It looks as if a tornado swept through your room!"

3.      And, my favorite, mother taught us religion: "You’d better pray that comes out of the carpet!"

At a university 600 students were asked to write on a piece of paper the most beautiful word in the English language.

422 wrote the word MOTHER.

112 wrote the word HOME.

Today is the day to honor all mothers.

However for some this can be a hard time.

Unmarried women, dreading the possibility of missing out on motherhood:

Divorced women, having to face raising their children alone,

Then there are those who may soon be losing their mothers.

These might not complain aloud, but in the quiet of their heart is a hurting pain.

But this morning, all of us know the touch of a mother.

A mother has loved us; has dressed us; has fed us; has disciplined us.

A mother has watched us grow, and prayed for our success.

This morning let's think about one of the finest mothers in the entire Bible:

Let’s look at Mary, the Mother of Jesus.

I.                   Mary is visited by Gabriel.

Luke 1:26 ¶ And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

27  To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.

28  And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoublack, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

a.      The angel said: The Lord is with thee!

                                                               i.      God was pledging Himself to guide this mother.

1.      God does that for every Christian mother.

2.      The Lord was with Mary.

ii.      Mothers you will never be a success unless God is with you.

                                                            iii.      Success comes from above.

II.                Mary praying

LUKE 1:46-55  This is one of the most beautiful prayers of the Bible, which Mary sings as a song to God.

Here are the actual words written by Jesus own mother.

This is a spectacular prayer-song.

Obviously Mary knew God in the depths of her heart.

a.      There was a mother named Monica.

                                                               i.      When her son became a teenager it was like living with a total stranger.

ii.      Then Her son broke her heart by leaving the church.

iii.      After much conflict he finally ran away and took up with some local scum of the earth.

                                                           iv.      Monica continued to pray.

                                                             v.      She found out that her son planned to sail to Italy in a great ship and live with some buddies in a life of sin.

vi.      She pleaded with him not to go. He went anyway.

vii.      Once in Italy he met a man named AMBROSE.

viii.      Ambrose led him to Christ.

ix.      Monica's son was AUGUSTINE, a renowned Christian, 400 AD.

b.      Mothers, pray for your children.

                                                               i.      Some mothers think it enough to try to make their children happy.

                                                             ii.      But that doesn’t work.

iii.      Spoiled children are the hardest to suffer.

                                                           iv.      Prayer is the essential!

                                                             v.      Even when it seems that your prayers are not being answeblack, don't give up praying for your son or your daughter.

vi.      Never give up. Remain on your knees.

vii.      You may be the only person praying for your child.

viii.      Mary was a mother of prayer.

If you are to be a success as a mother you must be a Mother of prayer.

This is the mother God chose for Jesus.

She was a woman of prayer before she had Jesus.

Did Mary pray this prayer without preparing her heart?

            I think not.

She was having “revival” when she opened her mouth to pray.

Mothers, how wonderful a treasure, for a baby to have a faithful Christian mother.

            Try singing unto the Lord.

            How refreshing for the soul.

III.             Mary was pregnant.

Matthew 1:18 ¶ Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

Matthew 1:19  Then Joseph her husband, being a just [man], and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.

This speaks of the trials within the Christian life.

Mary and Joseph were betrothed.

Some time during that betrothal Mary said: I am Pregnant.

This was devastating news.

Joseph's first thought was to Divorce her privately.

Notice something of admiration here about Mary.

The Bible says that they had not come together yet. She had high standards.

She dated Joseph because she knew she could trust him.

They were a Godly couple.

Never date someone that you can't trust.

Young single ladies, Let me speak frankly to you today.

Let me suggest a gift you can give to your new husband on your wedding day.

Give yourself to your new husband as a fresh unopened package on the day of your marriage.

1.      This requires staying untouched by all the young men you will meet.

2.      It also requires not letting your future husband open the package too soon.

Keep yourself reserved for your special husband.

And wait for the honeymoon night for the gift to be given.

Mary is an example for all young people today.

Save yourself for your marriage, both men and women.

Reserve yourself for that special person in your life.

Mary was a pregnant “virgin.”

She submitted to Gods special will for her life.

Joseph found out about it.

Here they were Betrothed and he does not know what to do.

But God reveals the truth to him in a dream.

Joseph acted wisely and courageously for Mary’s sake.

As you select that special person to be your life partner, look for Character.

Look for Christ-likeness.

A person who does not put Jesus first, probably will not put you first, above all other women.

IV.              Mary Worshipped God

Luke 2:41 ¶ Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover.

Blessed are the children whose mothers go to church.

Mary was a church going mother.

She and her husband spent the full number of days at the Passover.

It looks like they did not skip out on some of it.

They went to camp meeting and attended as many as possible.

They went in for all they could get out of the worship experience.

V.                 Mary was a good mother.

Matthew 2: This takes place later when they were living in a house.

Wise men came to see Jesus.

When they saw Jesus they worshipped Him.

Now notice verse 11  "And when they were come into the house they saw the young child with his babysitter"

NO! They saw Jesus with his mother.

Mary was not a mother of absence.

Now I am not condemning people if circumstances dictate some childcare.

But let's strive to maximize our parenthood.

I know we can vote by proxy, but how much better to raise our children by actual presence.

And there are some few mothers who are “absent” while they are at home.

The mother watching soap operas, while her children are doing who knows what?

Or she lives on the phone while her children peruse HBO or MTV or who knows?

Mothers, spend quality time with your children. Let's do as Mary did.

And both times she lost Him for 3 days!

Recall the two times?

1.      Once at the temple when they thought he was with relatives.

This shows that Jesus had relatives who also went to church. Godly aunts, uncles, grandmothers!

2.      The second time she lost Jesus was when He was on the cross.

Gone from her Three days.

It is hard to lose your son when you are already a widow.

Joseph either died or was killed.

Possibly the other brothers were also dead.

Jesus had to place His dear Mother into the care of one of His disciples.

Mary risked her life to be with her Son there by the cross.

Mothers; love your children.

Your children need your love.

Barbara Barton was a loving mother.

She lived in Oregon and deliveblack TWINS in 1994.

She refused treatment for leukemia during her pregnancy because that could have harmed her babies.

She died Jan. 22, 1995 leaving behind her husband and twins and a 4-year old daughter.

She, like all true mothers, placed her children above her own life.

Mothers are special.

Their love is priceless.

One day a UPS driver knocked on the door and a little boy answeblack.

“Hi, Little fellow. Are you all alone?”

“Yes,” he explained, “Mom is in the hospital and me and my brother and my 2 little sisters and my daddy, we are here all alone!”

When the mother is gone, you are all alone!

The mother makes the house into a home.

And Jesus makes the lady into a great mother.

Invite Jesus into your heart. Jesus will make you into a woman of greatness.

Your children deserve the best.

With Jesus in the Mother’s heart, it will be a happy home.

"Her children arise up and call her BLESSED" Proverbs 31:28.

Happy Mothers day!
