Heaven's Cure For Earth's Care

Heaven's Cure For Earth's Care

Phil 4:1-9

Introduction:

"Heaven's cure for earth's care" is, according to Phil. 4:7, "the peace of God, which passeth all understanding."

A.        Paul is offering this remedy from the "God of peace" (V. 9) for doing what we have learned, received, heard, and seen.

Phil 4:9, "Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you."

B.         The difficulties and uncertainties of life have always afforded men and women abundant opportunities for worry.

1.         However, never have the temptations to worry and be filled with anxiety been so great as today.

2.         Washington DC was gripped by fear while the Sniper was free.

C.         The child of God should not be overcome with fear and worry, yet many are!

1.         With some of us, our fears and anxieties arise from failures in our past.

2.         Others are anxious, fretful and worried about the future, about old age, health or finances.

3.         Still others are overburdened with care about the present.

D.        Many fears are imaginary, and many of the things we worry about have never happened, probably will never happen, but we worry about what if they do happen.

I.          For The Christian, Fear, Anxiety And Worry Are Useless, Unnecessary, Unseemly and even sinful.

A.        It Is Useless For A Christian To Worry, To Be Fearful Or To Be Anxious.

1.         Turn to Matthew 6:25-27

2.         What do our worries and fears accomplish? --- absolutely nothing.

3.         And nothing grows as quickly as worry,

a)         which is why it is so dangerous

b)         It harms us physically, mentally and spiritually.

4.         It can: Destroy our digestion, Increase our blood pressure, Cause insomnia, Paralyze our body, Seriously affect our heart.

B.         It is Unnecessary For A Christian To Worry, To Be Fearful Or To Be Anxious.

1.         Because we have a heavenly Father who:

a)         Is all-powerful and all-loving,

b)         Knows what His children need,

c)         Is able to supply that need.

2.         Read further; Matthew 6:28-32

3.         We also have His promise.  Turn to Hebrews 13:5,6

C.         It Is Unseemly For A Christian To Worry, To Be Fearful Or To Be Anxious.

1.         It is contradictory to the “trust” we have placed in God.

1 Pet 5:7, "Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you."

2.         It is Unworthy for a Christian to worry.

Col 1:10, "That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;"

Now, what is the cure for anxiety and fear? --- What goes to the root of the problem?

II.        Be Careful For Nothing.

A.        Phil 4:6, "Be careful (anxious) for nothing; ..,"

B.         This does not mean we are to be thoughtless --- It does mean that we are not to be over come with care and anxiety.

C.         "But," you say, "it is no use to say to someone who is filled with care and anxiety, 'Don't be afraid! Don't worry!'.

1.         You are right --- It does no good for a doctor, psychiatrist, or pastor to say to someone, "Don't worry!"

2.         However, It is very different when God says it --- He has the remedy and the power to effect our deliverance.

III.       Be Prayerful For Everything.

A.        Phil 4:6, "... in every thing by prayer and supplication ..."

B.         Have you ever brought your fear or your worry to God in a definite way and asked God to remove it?

C.         "By Prayer" --- not just talking about it, but actually praying.

D.        "And Supplication" --- earnest and intense prayer for others.

E.         "Let Your Request Be Made Known Unto God" --- this implies definiteness --- specific prayers ...

F.         Illustration: Stuart and I were out trying to chase down some parts to repair the van.  It seemed we were not getting anywhere.  We also needed a locksmith to set the tumblers in our lock.  There were none in the Farmington area, and as we drove to parts stores no one could direct us to one along our path.  We also were about out of money.  As we drove along, it seemed that nothing was working out.  I asked, did we pray about this?  We looked at each other and just laughed.  We hadn’t, so we stopped along the road and bowed our heads and prayed.  Within a mile I spotted a locksmith shop.  We stopped, parked and walked to the door.  But it seemed that the store was out of business.  It was dark and the front area was litteblack and almost empty.  Before leaving I tried the door.  It opened.  We walked in.  In the back was a man who told us that he was moving his business to a better location.  I asked if he could set up our key to open the lock; he said “yes.”  As he worked I prayed that God would loose my tongue to witness to him before we left.  But before I had the chance, he asked what we did for a living.  We told him I was the pastor of a Baptist church and that Stuart was a missionary starting on deputation raising support.  I then asked him if he was saved.  He said yes that he had trusted Christ as his Saviour.  As we left I asked him how much we owed, and he said I probably couldn’t afford it, so he wouldn’t charge anything.  We had been told that it would cost $35.00.  Again, we laughed at how slow we were to pray.

IV.       Be Thankful In every thing.

A.        Phil 4:6, "... in every thing ... with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God."

1.         We may not be thankful for everything,

2.         But we can be thankful in everything:

Rom 8:28, "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose."

Col 3:15, "And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful."

Phil 4:4, "Rejoice in the Lord alway: again I say, Rejoice."

B.         Now, notice the results of mixing together these three ingblackients in God's prescription:

1.         Be Careful for nothing --- Be Prayerful for everything --- Be Thankful in everything.

Phil 4:7, "And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."

2.         The CERTAINTY of this peace --- "shall ..."

3.         The QUALITY of this peace --- "... of God" --- Can you conceive of God being worried, hurried or fearful?

4.         The NATURE of this peace --- "... passeth all understanding."

a)         It is beyond logical explanation,

b)         But not beyond personal experience.

5.         The SUFFICIENCY of this peace --- "... shall keep your hearts and minds."

a)         There are two places where worry and fear seek to enter.

b)         God's peace will stand guard like a sentinel to keep away fear, worry and anxiety --- from our heart and mind

Isa 26:3, "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee."

6.         The Channel of this peace --- "... through Christ Jesus."

Rom 5:1, "Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:"

Col 1:20, "And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself;"

John 14:27, "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."

It Is In Christ Jesus Himself That We Find "Heaven's Cure For Earth's Care.

Proverbs 3:5  Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.  6  In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.  7  Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

The world has much to fear.  Especially in the Bible.  But not Christians.

2 Thessalonians 2:1  Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and [by] our gathering together unto him,  2  That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.  3  Let no man deceive you by any means: for [that day shall not come], except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
