Biography:
George Walker Bush 43d president
of the United States (1946,
2001). George Walker Bush was
Born in New Haven, Conn. The eldest
son of President George H. W. Bush,
he was was raised in Texas and, like
his father, attended Phillips Academy
in Andover, Mass., and Yale, graduating
in 1968. He subsequently earned a
Harvard M.B.A. (1975) and worked in
the oil and gas industry (197586).
Bush helped manage his father's 1988
presidential campaign, then became
managing partner (198994) of
the Texas Rangers baseball team. During the Vietnam War era Bush served for 5 years
as a pilot in the Texas Air National
Guard. He married Laura Welsh, a librarian,
in 1977.
He spent much of the 1970s and 1980s
working in the oil and gas business
in Texas. In 1987-1988 Bush took a
leave from private business to work
on his father's presidential campaign
as both an adviser and a speechwriter.
After his father won the presidency,
Bush gathered a group of investors
to purchase the Texas Rangers team
and became managing general partner
of the team from 1989 to 1994. Then,
in 1994, at age 48, he won the governorship
of Texas 53.5% of the vote against
the supposedly unstoppable Ann Richards.
During his first term as governor,
Bush focused on antidrug and anticrime
measures, the death penalty, large
tax cuts and welfare reform that required
benefit recipients to work. He also
worked hard to improve public schools
and make them more friendly to the
large Hispanic population.
Then, in 2000, with only 6 years of
politics under his belt, he made the
bold decision to run for president.
The election turned out to be the
closest race ever in the history of
the US. Due to the extreme closeness
of the results in Florida, as well
as confusing ballots, there were several
recounts. A victor was not announced
for several weeks after the election.
Finally it was determined by a vote
of 5-4 in the Supreme Court that Bush
was the winner. His reign as president
has been most challenging in light
of the 9/11 attacks and the subsequent
war against terrorism.
The attacks of September 11th changed
America - and in President Bush's
words, "in our grief and anger
we have found our mission and our
moment." President Bush declared
war against terror and has made victory
in the war on terrorism and the advance
of human freedom the priorities of
his Administration. Already, the United
States military and a great coalition
of nations have liberated the people
of Afghanistan from the brutal Taliban
regime and denied al Qaeda its safe
haven of operations. Thousands of
terrorists have been captured or killed
and operations have been disrupted
in many countries around the world.
In the President's words, "our
Nation - this generation - will lift
a dark threat of violence from our
people and our future. We will rally
the world to this cause by our efforts,
by our courage. We will not tire,
we will not falter, and we will not
fail."
